How to cancel your insurance in Luxembourg ?

Do you want to cancel your insurance policy but don't know where to start? In Luxembourg, strict rules govern the cancellation of car or home insurance. You can do so in four cases: when the policy matures, if you move abroad, if your insurer cancels another of your policies or if it increases the price. The details.

Cancellation at the maturity of the policy:

Have you found a policy that you think offers a better deal and you would like to change insurance? All you have to do is send your insurer a registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt. This letter should arrive no later than 30 days before the anniversary date of the policy you wish to cancel.

If you think you might forget, it’s good to know that, every year, you receive a maturity notice from your insurer around two months before your policy is due to be renewed.

Cancelling your insurance when you move abroad

Are you leaving Luxembourg? For your insurer, this means that the risk no longer exists and the policy is no longer needed (known as "automatic cancellation").

There is no deadline for notifying the insurer, unlike the other grounds for cancellation, where the deadlines are governed by law.

You can notify your insurance company's head office by registered letter (not compulsory), or simply send an e-mail to your broker. Remember to specify the date and provide proof of your departure from Luxembourg or your move abroad (e.g. change of residence certificate issued by the Commune, insurance policy issued in the new country of residence, etc.).

Of course, you will be reimbursed pro rata for the period of insurance not covered.

In the event of a price increase

If your insurer increases its prices, apart from indexation, you are entitled to terminate your policy. To do this, send your letter within 60 days of receiving the maturity notice (i.e. the document informing you of the new price).

Cancellation if your insurer revokes one of your policies

After compensating you for a claim, an insurer may cancel one of your insurance policies. If you have several policies with the same insurer, you may choose to cancel your other policies. In this case, you have one month to send a registered letter after your insurer has notified you of the cancellation.
